Dr. Ali Choudhury

Dr. Ali A. Choudhury, 82, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2022, at home, surrounded by his beloved family. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Helen; his children, Una Soskin (Jeff) and Azam; his loving grandchildren, Kelsey, Samuel, Lauren, Thomas, Jaden, Ryan, and Rebecca; and his nephew, Atik Rahman (Mithune). This incredible man who lived for service to others and believed in giving quality care to his community immigrated to the US from Bangladesh by the way of the UK. He received his MD in 1961 from Dhaka Medical College in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He then started his medical career in the UK where he trained at London University, Glasgow University, and Edinburgh University. He then came to the US and completed his Nephrology fellowship at the University of Louisville. Life led him to settle the Tidewater area to start his career and is where he retired in 2014. Here he established Portsmouth Nephrology in 1980 and during his long and distinguished Nephrology career he held staff privileges at DePaul Medical Center, Maryview Medical Center, and Portsmouth General Hospital. He held many leadership positions in the medical community, including Chair, Department of Medicine of Portsmouth General Hospital; Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine of EVMS Medical Director of Portsmouth Renal Center, Vivra Renal Center, Gambro Healthcare as well as Medical Director of the inpatient and outpatient Dialysis units at Maryview Medical Center. He served on the Board of Directors for the Tidewater area Kidney Foundation and Portsmouth General Hospital. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Portsmouth Academy of Medicine, serving as President in 1994 and President of the Portsmouth Academy Foundation in 1999. He maintained membership in many of the medical societies at the local, state, national, and international levels. These included the Medical Society of Virginia, Virginia and American Societies of Internal Medicine, Southern Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the Southeastern Dialysis and Transplant Association, the American and International Societies of Nephrology, Renal Physician Association, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was elected to Fellowship, receiving the highest honorific of FRCP(Glasg). Dr. Ali A. Choudhury was involved in the Bangladesh medical association of North America (BMANA) for the founding and was the first Bengali US trained nephrologist. He was a pilar of the community, well-known, and truly respected as a physician and person. His passion for life and family was his biggest and brightest source of pride and achievement for him. He fiercely loved his grandchildren. His favorite pastime was to share stories of his children and grandchildren with his friends and colleagues. His face would light up when speaking of them and even to the very end, he made sure that his love was felt through his smile, a warm gesture, or an embrace. Dr. Choudhury and his wife shared a true love for different cultures and enjoyed visiting all corners of the world. They took every opportunity to take time off, relished planning extensive trips, and loved the journeys they took together. His family longed for their return and enjoyed the extra suitcase…or two, packed with goodies for everyone. He, along with Helen, embodied the American Dream with all the genuine meaning and practice that the term holds. A funeral service and visitation will be held at Loving Funeral Home 3225 Academy Avenue, Portsmouth on Monday, June 13, 2022 promptly beginning at 5:00pm and concluding at 7:00pm. Family and close friends will be saying a few words and sharing their memories of this beloved man. This will be followed by a Janazah prayer. Burial will be at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens 4569 Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 3 pm. There will be a final farewell prayer at the Chapel. Afterward, the family invites anyone who would like to celebrate Dr. Choudhury’s life and memory at a reception, with location to be announced at the Chapel.
