Dr. George Martin Stone II

Dr. George Martin Stone, II, USN/USMC (Ret.) George Martin Stone, II, 84, passed away peacefully at Bon Secours Maryview Nursing Center surrounded by his family on October 21, 2018. He was born in Geneva, NY to the late George M. and Charlotte M. Stone. He was the devoted husband of Celia A. Stone for the last 65 years. George was predeceased by a brother, Frederick E. Stone, and an infant son. George is survived by his wife Celia A. Stone; his children: Linda C. Stone Johnson (Steven), George M. Stone, III (Susan), Gary M. Stone (Sherry Fuson), Kenneth L. Stone (Nancy), Elizabeth A. Stone Ciccone, and Rebecca A. Stone (Tricia Morgan); grandchildren: Robert M. Williams, Sherri L. Williams Holland, Jessica D. Stone Wesson (Wes), Gary M. Stone, II, Michelangelo A. Ciccone, Matthew M. Ciccone (Sarah), Elizabeth A. Ciccone, and Mark R. Ciccone (Rachel); his brother and sister-in-law, Walter S. and Madeline K. Stone, many nieces and nephews, several cousins, and a host of friends and special people in his life. George was a proud great grandfather to Aaliyah King, Ryland Williams, and Mya, Tia, and Ana Wesson. George had exemplary service in the United States Navy for 28 years as a physician and flight surgeon, with time aboard the USS Forrestal (CVN 59) as the senior medical officer. After retirement from the military, he continued serving for another 16 years in a civilian capacity as the senior physician at the medical clinic at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA. George was an active member of the Centenary United Methodist Church and choir in Portsmouth for over 30 years. He was a former member of the Tidewater Orchid Society. He was a member of the University of Florida Alumni Association. George will be fondly remembered for owning several hundred orchids, which he proudly showed to family and friends. He was also an avid numismatist. Perhaps what George loved most was visiting the family cottage with his family in upstate New York, which was built by his parents in 1938. Viewing will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at Loving Funeral Home, 3225 Academy Avenue, Portsmouth, VA. Interment with military honors will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 10:00 am at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk, VA. Services will follow at Centenary United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, VA at 11:30 am.
