Charlie Lewis Hurt, Jr.

Charlie Lewis Hurt, Jr., who fought a long and diligent battle with cancer and kidney failure, took his journey Home to be with God, on August 15, 2006. He crossed over peacefully in his sleep. He would have been 81 on August 25th. He was predeceased by his wife, Nell; and his parents, Charlie, Sr. and Eva; a sister, Alice, and a brother, Floyd. Charlie was born in Buckingham County, Va. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Charlie was retired from NNSY Co-Operative Association, where he was manager for 13 yrs. He had previously retired from Kraft Foods, where he had worked for 17 yrs. Years before that, he had been a manager for 14 yrs. of the A & P grocery store on High St. in downtown Portsmouth. He was a member of the VFW Post #9382; a member of Western Branch Lodge #189; a member of Khedive Shriners, the Director?s Staff; a past member of the Scottish Rites, and a past member of the Moose Lodge. He was a member of the Police Association of Va, and had been a member of a CB Radio Club in downtown Portsmouth, and his call letters were KCI-6769, and his handle was ?Casper?. His survivors include a daughter, Patty Manning and her husband, Ernie, of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a son, Jack Jackson and his wife, Gail, of Haymarket, Va.; a daughter, Judy Hurt, and a son, Tommy Hurt and his wife, Patsy, all of Reidsville, NC. He has 4 grandchildren, who are, Amber Manning, Heather Priddy, Chris Jackson, and Amy Duff. He has 7 great-grandchildren, who are Madelyn, Jax, Lauren, Jack, Kendall, Cooper, and Jacquelyn. He had a loving, faithful and caring companion, Darlene Crossley, who shared her love and goodness with him right to his time of passage. She cared for him diligently day and night. He also has a surviving brother, James, of Mechanicsville, Va., as well as many nieces and nephews and many other family members. Our family would like to thank Shirley Clarin, who cared for Charlie during his long and hard battle. She has become an ?adopted grandmother? to our family, and especially to the children. She has given our family strength, love, and support, as well as to Charlie. But her strongest gift to him, as well as to our family, is her wonderful sense of humor. We would also like to thank Dorothy Ellerbe, who came to care for him through the Hospice program of Bon Secours Hospital. She has a wonderful insight of life that she shared daily with our family and had a humor about her, as well; that she openly shared that lifted Charlie and our family. The children, as well as our family, grew to care deeply for these ladies. The children loved laughing and playing with them, which gave Charlie great joy in seeing his family happy while he waited patiently for his journey to complete. These ladies worked together as a team to care for him, as well as to keep our family together in love and strength. We thank Bon Secours Hospice for their relentless ways of love and care for Charlie, as well as our family. They had great admiration for him, as he did for all his caregivers. They are a great group of ladies who work tirelessly for those who are ill and in need of their care and support. A special heart-felt thank you to all of his Dr.?s who had a hand in his care, especially Dr. J. Richard Auman, who became our family?s advocate in his health care right until the end. He is such a compassionate human being, as were all his Dr.?s. Thanks for allowing Charlie to have, as well as keep, his dignity during his long illness. Charlie will be greatly missed by his family, as well as many, many friends. He had a wonderful personality that he shared with all. He deeply loved his family and he truly loved life. He always said, even at the end, ?where there?s life, there is hope?, and we all experienced his words right until the end. He gave our family a wonderful gift, which is the same gift God gave to him??PEACE. We all experienced through his long illness the true process of life and death, which allowed us all time to be with him and be able to learn how to accept this so peacefully, as well as give us all time for him to share his many wonderful stories of his life to us. His great wisdom and knowledge and love will carry on now through his family, to be shared and passed on to their families. He will never be forgotten. He was a great teacher of life. We miss you and love you?.ALWAYS AND FOREVER. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 19th, on the 9th anniversary of his wife, Nell?s death, by the Rev. Bob Cofield and Rev. Larry Adams in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel with Masonic Rites. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made to the VFW Post #9382, as well as to the American Cancer Society and also the National Kidney Foundation.
