Gloria Sumner Jones

Gloria Sumner Jones, 81, of Chesapeake, VA, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2024, with her beloved family by her side. She was born in Portsmouth, VA to Betty and Thomas Archie Sumner. She was predeceased by her parents, step mother, Evelyn Sumner, beloved husband, Sherwood Johnson Jones, and her infant son Brian. Gloria was married to Sherwood Jones for 62 years. Their marriage was filled with love and laughter. Their dedication to one another was unsurpassed, a true example of companionship and faith to all who had the pleasure of knowing them. They loved dancing, camping and just having a great time. Gloria spent 27 years working as a bus driver for Chesapeake Public Schools. She loved and treasured every child she met and made each one who had the good fortune to ride her bus feel special and cherished. Gloria’s true calling was serving God and practicing her faith by caring for others. No one was a stranger around her, and she always had something delicious to offer any visitor to her home. She enjoyed cooking and baking and all who knew her had a favorite dish or cake from her kitchen. Gloria was a lifelong member of Westhaven Baptist Church; she was active in all women’s activities and sang in the choir. A kind and loving mother, Gloria is survived by her children: Keith Jones of Bealeton, VA and Anita Jones Cavanagh and her husband Patrick of Currituck, NC. Her five grandchildren who were the lights of her life: Brittany Jones-Pugh of Austin, TX, Alexander Jones of Fredericksburg, VA, Regen Cavanagh and fiancée Rachael Cooke of Chesapeake, VA, Nolan Cavanagh, serving in the US Army in Fairbanks, AK and Benjamin Jones, serving in the US Coast Guard in Sandiego, CA and her great granddaughter Lainey Jane Cavanagh. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas “Bert” Sumner and wife Vickey of Portsmouth, VA, as well as Liana Jones of Stafford, Virginia. Gloria will be missed dearly by family, many children who grew up at her home, and friends until they hear her sweet laugh again. A funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 11:00 am in Westhaven Baptist Church. The family will receive friends in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, is handling the arrangements. Interment will be private.
