Hilda H. Cuddington

Hilda H. Cuddington left her earthly body for a heavenly one on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017. She was the “anchor” for her family and was always a strong guiding force, an independent lady, who worked outside the home until she was over 70. Hilda was born and raised in the tobacco farming region surrounding Kenly, North Carolina. Newly married in 1948, Hilda and her young groom, Billy Cuddington, pioneered a new life in Tidewater Virginia. Billy and Hilda’s success in both the work world and family life motivated numerous family and friends from North Carolina to migrate to the Tidewater area. Many of them initially stayed with Billy and Hilda as they started their new lives. Hilda loved her family, her church and took great pride in her work. She and Billy were long standing and very active members of Alexander Baptist Church where she was the Church Clerk for over 20 years, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was always extremely proud of her three daughters and wanted them to have the best life possible without constraints. Hilda led by example in an era when many women were more confined by society’s expectations. Hilda was predeceased by her husband of 63 years Billy E. Cuddington. Left to cherish their memories of her; beloved daughters, Carolyn C. Cramer and husband John V. “Van” Cramer of Spring, TX, Edna C. Smith and partner Michael Enslen of West Chester, OH, and Susan C. Clark of Suffolk, VA; four grandchildren, George R. Kahn, III and wife Holly W. Kahn of Chesapeake, VA, Renée K. Weston and husband Mark Weston of Spring, TX, Stacy P. Fisher and husband Clayton W. “Clay” Fisher of Fairview, NC, and John W. Cramer of Spring, TX; nine great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Ashton, Matthew, Madeline, Abigail, Nathaniel, Evan, Kristen, Nathan and Saige; a great-great-grandchild, Nicholas, Jr. She is also survived by siblings, Louise Wall and husband Ritchie Wall, Billy Hatcher and wife Kay Hatcher and many loved nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and brothers and sisters in Christ. A funeral service will be held at 10am Friday in Alexander Baptist Church with burial in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, 524 Cedar Rd, Chesapeake. Visitation will be held in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, Thursday from 5:30 to 7pm.
