Margaret Gaskins

Margaret Leona Ward Gaskins of Zuni, VA Margaret Gaskins at the age of 92 went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on New Year’s Day 2023, surrounded by family. She was affectionately known as the “the candy lady in Windsor”, “birthday phone call lady” and formerly as “the pound cake lady”. She was a native of Chesapeake, Virginia and was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd E Gaskins, Sr.; her parents, Algie B. Ward, Sr. and Elizabeth Culpepper Ward; her sister Frances Ward Old and her brother A.B. “Buddy” Ward, Jr. Left to cherish her memory are her three sons, Lloyd Ervin Gaskins, Jr. and wife, Angela, George T. Gaskins and wife Tracie, William Joseph Flanagan-Gaskins and husband, Michael; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rosalie Hoblit and Mary Elizabeth Ward; numerous cousins and many special friends who have enriched her life as well as ones who assisted her when she lived alone. Margaret and her husband were educators that retired from the Chesapeake School System. She still held active membership in Delta Kappa Gamma Society International-Beta Iota Chapter, Virginia Retired Teachers Association Chesapeake, Portsmouth Music Study Club, National Watercolor Society and AARP. She has been a member of Churchland Baptist Church since 1954, a previous member of Oak Grove Methodist Church where she was married. She currently worshiped at Windsor Baptist Church. She touched many lives with her numerous talents; she was a talented musician playing, singing and writing songs, she loved playing the piano, organ, drums and harmonica, a painter, a wood carver, photographer, fisherwoman, tatter, and cook. She is best known for sharing scripture and loving people! She will truly be missed. Margaret prepared most of her obituary a few years ago and to all of you who know her well, you have to smile at her note on the top of her draft that said, “KEEP it SHORT!” There will be a Funeral Service in Churchland Baptist Church Sanctuary on Monday, January 9th at 2:30pm. Interment will be private in Churchland Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Windsor Baptist Church, P O Box 498, Windsor, VA 23487.
