Helen Carroll Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Helen Loving Carroll, 90, of Portsmouth VA passed away peacefully on May 24th holding her beloved daughter’s hand. Helen was born in Amherst County in 1931 and was fourth of the six children of Elmer and Helen Loving Sr. She was a member of Elon Presbyterian and always reminiscence about her childhood in the country. Helen married Thomas Perryman Carroll in 1953 and they moved briefly to Arlington before making their home in Portsmouth in 1968. Helen enjoyed her career as a medical secretary and volunteered for years as a prayer team call member for the 700 Club. She loved helping women feel beautiful and age gracefully through her Mary Kay business and she was a devoted member of Green Acres Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities over the years including as an elder and Sunday school teacher. Helen loved God, her family and friends and was a delight to everyone she met. Even to the end, her ladylike manners and beautiful smile were always present. Helen genuinely cared for people, never knew a stranger and through her beautiful life we learned what it is like to truly put others first. In her free time Helen loved to garden, serve in her church, enjoy social activities with her many groups of friends and prepare Sunday meals for her family. Helen is survived by her son, Michael Thomas Carroll and wife, Dana and her daughter, Jennifer Carroll Newsome and husband, Lane; her five beloved grandchildren, Kameron, Brady, Riley, Eli and Emily and two great grandchildren, Alysia and LakeLynn. She is also survived by her sisters, Dorothy Stinnett and Vera Campbell and husband, Ed of Amherst County. She was predeceased by her brothers, Elmer H. Loving Jr, Robley D. Loving, and sister, Shirley Huffman. Helen lost her beloved husband Tom in 2001 and we are comforted that she is rejoicing being by his side once again. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, May 27th beginning at 10am at Green Acres Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth. A memorial service will begin at 11 am with a reception to follow. Burial at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens will be private. We would like to express our deepest gratitude for the personalized care that Helen received from the Hospice nurses at Comfort Care.
