February 10, 2018
Mohammad Khalil, 36, died February 10, 2018. Mohammad moved to the United States with his family several years ago, said Imtiaz Zaman, a close friend. Mohammad was working as an accountant in Bangladesh before he dropped everything for a fresh start. He was proud to serve his new country in the Navy and had dreams of becoming an officer. “He was one of the lucky people who won a visa through the lottery system,” Imtiaz said. “He was a gentleman who had high aspirations and who came to the United States with a lot of hope. Unfortunately, his end came too soon.” Mohammad leaves behind his wife, Mahfuja Sathee; and their two sons. Imtiaz Zaman said Mohammad had a green thumb and spent a lot of time in his backyard tending to his robust vegetable garden. The Navy said Mohammad Khalil enlisted in July 2011. He trained in Illinois until August 2016, when he was stationed in Norfolk to serve as a logistics specialist 2nd class. Mohammad became a U.S. citizen and bought a home for his family near Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach. Funeral prayer for Mohammad Khalil will be held at noon on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the Islamic Center of Tidewater, 1442 W 49th St. in Norfolk.
