Charles Edward "Butch" Lemmond

Charles, “Butch”, as he was called by family and friends, was a career electrician at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 31 years. He and his wife Peggy raised 2 daughters and cared for grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the children of family friends. He departed this life on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Portsmouth, VA. He was 86 years old. Charles was born in Norfolk, VA. He is the son of Rae Jennings Lemmond and Sarah Margaret Evans. He was one of six children. Five of whom have preceded him in death. Charles met Peggy, the love of his life, when they were both working at a Giant Open-Air Market in Portsmouth. He worked in the produce department; she worked at the lunch counter. They both said it was love at first sight. However, it may have been Butch’s motorcycle and “Bad Boy” image and Peggy's good looks that brought these two together. Charles is remembered for his work as an electrician at NNSY in Shop 51 and as part of the Tiger Team. He had the opportunity to travel the world while performing electrical maintenance on Navy vessels. His favorite was submarines. He had the opportunity to visit every submarine base and outpost in the world. His favorite was Guam. When asked why, he stated that, “It was the most beautiful.” After his retirement in 1995, He spent a lot of time with family and friends and was always helping others. He would perform odd jobs for anyone in need. He was also proud of being a “Junk Man”. He turned other folks’ trash into treasure, and their discarded items into dollar bills. In 2008, he paid cash for a fully loaded Malibu and a vacation for him and Peggy in Branson, Missouri, from the proceeds gained from items rescued from curbside. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; his brothers, Roger, Pete, and Rae; and his sister, Ethel Carter. He is survived by his two daughters, Tanya Lemmond and Sonya Inman (husband Lee); three grandchildren, Jeremy Austin (wife Tracey), Wesley, and Tristan Inman; two great-grandchildren, Blake and Alissa Austin; great-great-granddaughter Amelia Austin; and his sister, Betty Sue Young. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:30 pm to 7 pm on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel. A celebration of life service, conducted by Pastor Randy Duncan, will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Loving Funeral Home. Interment will immediately follow the service at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, 4569 Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk, Virginia 23435, In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dementia Society of America or the American Stroke Association.
