June A. Cahoon

June Avril Cahoon, 92, our wonderful mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, went home to be with the Lord Jesus on January 18, 2019. She was born in Hounslow, England on June 16, 1926 to the late Albert and Florence Hotston. Predeceased were her sisters Peggy, Hilda and Elsie. During WWII, June worked in a restaurant as a waitress to help contribute to the family income. She survived the London bombings and food rationing, traveled to the States as a war bride and become a naturalized US citizen on March 5, 1969. June was predeceased by her late husband Thomas L. Cahoon and two grandchildren Brian Frye and Jessica Cahoon. She is survived by her daughter Rita Frye, and sons Thomas W. Cahoon and his wife Gail, Gordon Cahoon, Glenn Cahoon and his wife Kathi, and David Cahoon. She is survived by her grandchildren Allen Cahoon, Blake Cahoon and his wife Bernadette, Becky Temple, Lisa Cahoon Eric Cahoon, Jennie Hill, Lauren Lombardo and her husband David, and Melina Cahoon, as well as 15 great grandchildren. Our “Nanny June” brought a light hearted positivity to every conversation. She enjoyed children and animals and appreciated them in such a sweet way. She was uncomplicated and straightforward yet gracious and deep. She was even tempered and never said a harsh word. It gave her the most joy to see as many family members as she could all at once. She loved her children and lived her life for them. When in good health, she spent much of her Sundays at church and devoted many hours to helping in the children’s ministry. One of her favorite things to do was to spend the day with her daughter and friends, often referred to as “The Golden Girls” by onlookers, having some lunch and a laugh after church. Her heart was always for the Lord’s will and she took great comfort in Him. She was a survivor of many trials in her life and dealt with much grief but the Lord brought her through and she never lost her faith. Family and friends will remember her sweetness and unconditional love, resourcefulness and energy and her charming British/ Southern American accent. She was an amazing southern cook and her made-to-order homemade French Fries were the best. We love you Nanny and we look forward to the day we will be with you again. Visitation service will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at Loving Funeral Home, in Portsmouth, VA. A life celebration service will be held on Thursday, January 24th 2019 at 2:00 pm at Point Harbor Community Church, 2705 Taylor Rd, Chesapeake, VA 23321. In lieu of flowers, Nanny would be happy if you donated to any animal rescue of your choice.
