Rick Burton

Richard (Rick) V. Burton was born in Charlottesville, Virginia. He died on Monday, December 9, 2024. Rick was a man of many talents and interests. He graduated from Churchland High School in 1974. He pitched for the middle and high school baseball teams and played softball into his 40s. He was a cabinet maker by trade, and his attention to detail and thoroughness brought clients to him through word of mouth. He was self-taught in his other interests. He collected vinyl since high school and transferred the music first to tape and then to digital. He had an exceptional sound system with speakers throughout the house and outside. Rick collected baseball cards since grade school and had some valuable cards from those early years. He belonged to 2 football fantasy leagues and one baseball league. He started collecting knives and then eventually bought a professional knife sharpener. He also collected tools, which you would know if you had ever visited his garage. As soon as he bought a Great Big Green Egg, he had to become the best griller, with briskets being his specialty. And there were Sunday’s racing slot cars and fishing trips to Hatteras. Rick was also an avid reader and he and his cousin shared favorite authors. He had a great sense of humor, was fun to be around, and generous to a fault. He was a great fan of the Atlanta Braves and helped his wife cheer on her alma mater, the Missouri Tigers. College basketball and pro baseball were his favorite sports. Rick was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Sarah, and his sister, Marcia. Also, his dogs Scotch & Soda; Max and Goldie; Ginger and Murphy. He is survived by his wife Susan (Sue); his brother Robert and wife Jean; his nieces whom he adored: Emily (Brian) and Rebecca (Becky) and her partner Kyle; cousins Kris (David), Lisa (Ed) and Andy (Brenda), and Tori who was so special and her fiancé James. Of course, our dogs Bennie and Rush. Our Atlanta Braves and Final Four comrade Darell. The Orrells who we’ve known since our softball days. Our wonderful neighbors William, Kerrie, Colin & Payton; and the Hoddinots. His Tuesday breakfast buddies Garry, Dave, Duggan, Steve, sometimes Gerald and Andy. And Sue’s fabulous beach girls the “brain trust” who have been supporting his wife forever. All have been a huge help and comfort to us. There will be a Celebration of His Life gathering at the Elizabeth Manor Golf & Country Club on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 3:30 pm.
