Thomas Carroll Kaufman

Thomas Carroll Kaufman, 86, formerly of Portsmouth, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in Richmond, Virginia. Tommy, as he was known to everyone who knew him, was the son of J. Carroll and Margaret T. Kaufman, the loving husband of his wife, Carolyn Williams Kaufman, and a dedicated father to his sons, Courtney and Christopher. Tommy was a native of Portsmouth. He graduated from Churchland High School in 1957 and was a long-time resident of Winston Road until he moved with Carolyn to the Masonic Home of Virginia. He graduated from Louisburg College in 1960. He and Carolyn were faithful members of Centenary United Methodist Church in Portsmouth and later of Highland Springs United Methodist Church with their move to Richmond. He was the owner of Kaufman Insurance Agency Ltd from 1962 to 2002. Tommy was prominent in the community throughout his life, supporting throughout the years as a member of Churchland Lodge #276 AF&AM, Life member, Mt. Horeb Royal Arch #11, Life member, Mann-Page Royal Arch #89; Richmond Commandery #2, Scottish Rite, Portsmouth Valley, Life member, Esther Chapter #37, OES; and Tidewater Chapter CPCU and Richmond Chapter CPCU. Tommy was previously a member of the Portsmouth Jaycees and the Cosmopolitan Club. Tommy proudly served his country as a member of the Coast Guard. Tommy is survived by his son, Courtney R. Kaufman, and his wife, Theresa; his granddaughter, Sarah M. Kaufman, and her mother, Elizabeth Kaufman Blake; his brother-in-law, James Allen Williams, and his wife, Glenda; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Christopher Hunter Kaufman; his wife of over 50 years, Carolyn Williams Kaufman; and his parents. A funeral service with Masonic Rites will be held on Monday, January 12, at 2 p.m. in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel with Rev. Daniel Anderson officiating. Tommy has asked that Memorial Contributions be made to the Masonic Home of Virginia, Highland Springs United Methodist Church, or Centenary United Methodist Church. Entombment with his wife in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum will be private at a later date.
